Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education beginning Sept 10th Wednesday
evenings In the final half-hour of class, we will include material from Bones for Life: Feldenkrais Natural Movement in Standing and Walking (see workshop description below). This transition will encode our new kinesthetic awareness of Awareness Through Movement into our daily and dynamic activities. “The most sophisticated and effective method I have seen for the prevention and reversal of deterioration of function.” - Margaret Mead Bones For Lifeâ classes teach movement for stimulating bone strength through natural movement and weight bearing posture. It was developed by Ruthy Alon, based on Dr. Fedenkrais's approach to somatic learning. Ms. Alon is a Senior Trainer of the Feldenkrais Method that began her life’s work with Feldenkrais in 1959. For an article about bone density improving significantly within four months of this course, visit: www.bonesforlife.com. Integrated Movement for Dance In this class, you'll receive individual attention and instruction, enabling you to perform Brazilian and African-inspired dances with easily articulated, deeply grounded body movement. You'll learn to adapt your individual body mechanics to the sinuous challenges of samba and other dances--and how to keep it smooth at any speed! Feldenkrais natural movement fundamentals are used, gently leading you to the embodiment of these dances. Class size is limited to 10 or fewer students to ensure individual attention. If you are new to the class, you're welcome to drop in once- after that you should buy a 6-punch card. (After you've completed at least six classes, you can drop in any time.) Price for Janelle's classes is $16 for drop-in and $90 for a 6-punch card that expires in 3 months. Please contact Janelle to pre-register for either or both of these classes.

Janelle Keane Campoverde is adjunct faculty for Evergreen State College and Antioch University teaching movement, sensory awareness and Brazilian dance. She designed, developed and taught courses in somatic education, drawing from her work as a certified Feldenkrais practitioner and her extensive studies with pioneers in the field of movement, perception and sensory awareness. She applies this to her life as a dancer. Janelle studied Brazilian dance at the Universidade Federal da Bahia in Salvador, Brazil and also traveled to Santiago, Cuba to intern with the renowned Ballet Folklórico Cutumba Dance Company. She dances professionally throughout the Northwest, performing both folkloric (traditional) and contemporary Brazilian and Cuban dances. Currently, Janelle serves as dance director and choreographer of the Seattle-based Samba group GiraSol, performing widely for both corporate and public events. She is a member of ˇTodo Folklore Cubano!, under the artistic directorship of José Carrión, former principal dancer and corps professor of Ballet Folklórico Cutumba de Santiago de Cuba, serving as dance partner to Mr. Carrión. Whenever possible, she takes her classroom "into the community", providing students the opportunity to perform at festivals such as Bumbershoot, Follklife, Brazilfest, and at popular Seattle-area parades, including the Fremont Solstice and Pioneer Square Mardi Gras Parades. Janelle has taught both Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movementâ and Afro-Brazilian dance at festivals and colleges throughout the country, including Sarah Lawrence College, Bastyr University, Southern Methodist University Theatre Department, Cornish College of the Arts, Whitman College, and the University of Washington. She also teaches dance in children's programs for the Ethnic Heritage Council's International Dance Program, the Northwest Folklife Festival Youth Program, South Sound Kids Drum and Dance, and the Pacific Northwest Ballet. Janelle has practiced insight meditation over 20 years and her teachers include Joseph Goldstein, Rodney Smith and Sharon Salzberg. She served on the board of Seattle Insight Meditation Society for 6 years. Her private practice in Feldenkrais Functional Integrationâ focuses on restoring efficient and comfortable movement, whether the limitation is a condition, an injury, a trauma, or habitual overuse from specialized activity. Under the mentorship of Ruthy Alon, Janelle is also a certified Bones for Lifeâ instructor, applying Dr. Feldenkrais’ method of somatic education to increasing bone density. She is dedicated to bringing ease to our dynamic movement as we age. Janelle is also a certified yoga instructor, and applies these skills of observation, accelerated learning and increased awareness to her teaching. In all of her instruction, Janelle uses our innate ability to learn most effectively when we are having fun.
